![]() ![]() They even drafted Mikel Leshoure to take his place (and then some). Smith was a restricted free agent and could have been tendered for relatively cheap, but the Lions decided instead to part ways with him entirely. I know I said no personnel moves, but this one is a little different. Instead, it invoked memories of the Marinelli era in which every short-yardage situation consisted of the entire offensive line and ball-carrier simply falling down a yard short of the line of scrimmage. Had Best broken through and picked up the first down, it would have been "gutsy." This is a bad decision because it failed. That said, this is one of those funny things about criticizing coaching decisions (especially play calls). In other words, there wasn't as much precedent for the imminent failure of that play. ![]() This was Best's second game as a rookie, he looked like an unstoppable machine at the time, he was fully healthy, and the inability of anyone on the team to execute a power-run scheme was not yet as glaringly obvious then as it is now. It's also that they were in field-goal range and lost that game by 3 points. It's that they ran the exact same play that failed on 3rd-and-1: Jahvid Best, straight up the middle. See, it isn't just that the Lions didn't convert on 4th-and-1. Schwartz's coaching decisions are about what he does with the guys he has and the situations he has in games.īut because Schwartz is a quality head coach, you'll notice two things right away: There aren't very many things to complain about, and the stuff there is to complain about isn't that bad.Īfter all, Schwartz never took the wind in overtime.įar be it from me to criticize a coach for going for it on fourth down against a team that has been tough to stop on offense. Schwartz certainly had a hand in those, but those weren't strictly his decisions, and they weren't coaching decisions. Of course, I'm not talking about draft picks, free-agent signings or other personnel moves. But like clockwork, I am here to point out some of the bigger coaching gaffes in Schwartz's young head-coaching career. When you make hundreds of decisions a day, that's bound to happen. Schwartz is a good coach, but he has made mistakes like any other coach. Draft well, build well, coach well, win games, make playoffs, answer questions about potential mistakes. This is pretty much standard procedure for any successful head coach. Since taking over as head coach of an 0-16 team in 2009, Schwartz has steadily improved the quality of players on the team, installed effective schemes on both sides of the ball, eliminated the much-discussed "culture of losing," taken the team to the playoffs and gotten himself second-guessed a bunch of times in the process. Jim Schwartz has brought two things to the Detroit Lions since 2009: talent and controversy. ![]() ![]() ![]() The body of a daddy longlegs is spherical or ovoid in shape. The only thing that I regret is that the AI doesn't handle the reinforcements very well, sometimes I've had them just throw them at me, one regiment after the other. They will flank you, outmaneouvre your firing lines, they will charge your infantry before you get the time to activate a square formation, they'll fake a retreat in order to catch your pursuing soldiers isolated and offguard, things can get out of control really fast, especially when outnumbered, which I always was against the indians (my main opponent throughout the campaign). In the maximum difficulty setting, the AI will effectively manage a 40 units army in real time with a strategy in mind. I strongly suggest that you put the slider up to maximum difficulty in battle, because the other difficulties are not nearly as rewarding. I've had a few naval battles in Rome 2, but never one enjoyable. This is something that is really missing from Rome 2, where having a fleet is almost completely useless because of automatic transport galleys and unrewarding because the sea trade is not lucrative enough (and not influenced by the size of your fleet). When you add the fact that in order to reach America or India, you need a fleet, and that trade is extremely lucrative, so much that countries like britain or the united provinces will bankrupt if blockaded, a fleet is always core to your strategy. ![]() When you win a naval battle, you get to capture the boats that are not destroyed (happens, but rarely), meaning that victory and defeats are extremely important, I got the british second rate boat while I had none and used it against them. It happened in the Carribean when my atlantic fleet escaped from the superior british navy in europe, and was intercepted by a fleet of the same size, which had the biggest boat of the whole world at the time, the HMS Minerva. The biggest victory I had in the whole campaign was a naval victory. While in other games they might seem useless and for flavor only, they are extremely important and useful in Empire. This first war wasn't even half as bloody as the next. I barely won that battle, reaching an all time low of 550 men and half my army destroyed, and got the indians to sign a peace treaty at the end of the turn. They were all elite by now and had seen horrors. In the last battle, I only had 1200 men left from the 9500 I had originally. I fought three battles during the same turn, and I miraculously took Mysore the next one, I now had to defend it against yet another attack. The battle started, they attacked me, and I fought for hours. Much to my surprise Between Mysore and my army stood 40 000 (!) Moghul soldiers, and another 14 000 men strong army of Maratha was waiting behind them. My goal was to capture Mysore, and then proceed north. I landed 9500 elite french soldiers, with a lot of experience and some elite units. ![]() I first captured Ceylon as an outpost, and proceded to invade the south of India. Supers are kind of like that, but with unique twists. The other major difference that sets Dimensions apart from the series’ earlier incarnations is the ability to purchase and equip a “drone” and a “super.” Drones are ships that follow behind providing a specific kind of support (one might provide a second big set of guns for your attacks, while another collects the geoms you’ll need to improve your multiplier). In short, the amount of attention and detail that went into the game’s stage design is nothing short of spectacular. Others feature obstacles like moving barriers that periodically turn a deadly shade of red. Some level feature portals to pop from end to end. Players now need to worry about enemies spawning in areas they can’t see quite yet. The 3D nature of the game is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. It’s a personality that is distinctly GW3. One of the game’s earlier stages, “Twisted Blister,” (pictured above) takes the classic Geometry Wars board and gives it a little squeeze the middle, like a recently unrolled sheet of paper. Not every level is 3D, but even the ones that aren’t can sometimes manage to display a sense of depth. These three dimensional playing fields make Geometry Wars 3 a vastly different experience from its predecessors, making the game feel like a mashup of 2008’s Geometry Wars 2 and Housemarque’s splendid Super Stardust HD. I guess that’s why there they got the name “Dimensions” from. Each challenge (yes, ok, they’re based around reaching a certain score) channels one of the modes from the series past, wrapping these around unique playing fields that add a third dimension to the series normally 2D gameplay. The first, most noticeable addition, is an adventure mode that gives players set challenges to complete rather than a straight high-score drive. In short, Dimensions is to Geometry Wars what Championship Edition is to Pac-Man - a brand new experience steeped in the comfort of familiarity. Geometry Wars 3 is steeped in the basics of Geometry Wars, but warps and layers those basics around a whole new experience. ![]() Much to my delight, I discovered a game that was simultaneously inventively new and yet instantly familiar. While I passed on last Fall’s console launch of Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions for this very reason, its port to mobile devices gave me an excuse to download the game and finally have a poke around. At best, I thought, this would be a game meant to rehash the old formula for a new audience. Geometry Wars 2 was released in 2008, and I couldn’t imagine anyone had been sitting on a great idea for a third one for more than half a decade. Its single screen challenge meant the field could be flooded with enemies in a matter of moments, and the sequel amped things up with additional game modes to challenge players in a variety of ways.Īs much as I loved the first two games in the series (and I did very, very much), I approached the third entry with a mix of skepticism and caution. You’re wildly, wildly wrong.įor those not in the know, here’s your quick and dirty history lesson: Geometry Wars is a twin-stick shooter series with simple graphics and wildly addictive gameplay that debuted on (and cemented the reputation of) Xbox Live Arcade in 2005. If, like me, you passed on Geometry Wars 3 when it launched on consoles last fall thinking “they couldn’t have possibly changed it enough to warrant a third go round,” you’re wrong. I’m going back to my one true love: Geometry Wars.ĭramatic? Sure, but it’s also a fairly good assessment of how I’ve spent the last five days with my smartphone. I know this is hard to hear, but you just need to listen. I’m sorry, every other game on my iPhone. But in the end, we were always meant for each other. ![]() It’s not that I don’t love the ones I’m with now, but sometimes, when an old flame comes back into your life, you just can’t help but fall in love all over again. You might need to pause before tapping on your super, and that hesitation can cost you dearly. ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to that, practicing in the single player simulation gives instant feedback on how different decisions affect growth in the industry. When I didn’t fully understand how a part of the simulation worked, like salesforce management for instance, I would play with different numbers in the single player mode. What resources did you pull on to develop your winning strategy which led you to the top of your course and then top in the Hall of Fame? It really helped me get a better idea of how it all connected. I relied on information I had gained from previous marketing courses I had taken, and like I mentioned before, the manual was a critical resource to my success. In addition, I created my own resource by making an excel spreadsheet that multiplied the reach of the different advertising channels per dollar by the percentage of each segment that used the different channels. ![]() What challenges did you face? How did you overcome these? This was incredibly useful as a quick reference to maximize the amount of people my advertising reached in each product segment. My first challenge was when I launched my first youth product. I thought I was a little aggressive with my projections, but they ended up being quite conservative. I lost a lot of sales because I didn’t order enough product. To overcome this I was much more aggressive in my projections for the next year and gained a majority of the youth segment. The second challenge I faced was maintaining growth towards the end of the simulation. I wasn’t able to overcome this, but after speaking with a classmate after the course I learned that I could have discontinued old product and launched new ones the next year. I knew I could discontinue products during the simulation, but didn’t understand that I could launch a new one in their place. Had I known this, I wouldn’t have ended the simulation with all 4 products in the decline phase of the product lifecycle, and would have been able to sustain my growth. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now you can have some hot-key sanity when switching back and forth from Windows Boot Camp to OS X.
